born in Schwarzach im Pongau (AT) in 1946. Internationally operating architect with offices in Vienna and Zurich. Residential, educational and laboratory buildings, such as a research lab on the Novartis campus in Basel, as well as numerous art and culture projects, like the conversion of the Vienna Secession, temporary exhibition spaces in Vienna and Berlin, the extension of the Rietberg Museum in Zurich, the refurbishment and extension of the Museum of the Twentieth Century (21er Haus) in Vienna, as well as the comprehensive conversion and reconceptualization of the Zurich Insurance Company Ltd. headquarters in Zurich. 1991–1995 President of the Vienna Secession. Lectureships in Vienna, Munich, Karlsruhe, and Berlin. 1992 appointed professor for urban renewal and design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin.

Since 1998 on the editorial staff of the Ö1/ORF Radio department for culture news (for a short time with ORF television); responsible for fine art and architecture – with a special interest in art in public space.

Graduated from Warsaw University in 1970. 1973–1986 Polish Academy of Sciences. 1993–2001 Director of the Zache˛ ta National Art Gallery, Warsaw. Active on various boards and in several committees, like as President of the Program Advisory Board and Program Director of the Warsaw Museum of Modern Art 2005–2007. Author of numerous texts on art translated into many languages; most recent publications: Sztuka w Polsce 1945–2005 (Art in Poland 1945–2005), 2005; Przecia˛g. Teksty o sztuce polskiej lat 80 (Trawl. Texts on Polish Art of the 80s), 2009. Since 1980 curator and co-curator of numerous exhibitions in Poland and abroad, like for the Gwangju Biennale and the São Paolo Biennial. 1973–2001 commissioner and curator of the Polish pavilion at the Venice Biennial. Comprehensive bilateral exhibition projects such as Moskwa –Warszawa/Warszawa – Moskwa 1900–2000, 2004; Tür an Tür.
