Nearly 200 submissions were received for this year's short film competition, which was dedicated to the theme "Climate. Utopia & Reality".
Sebastian Acker - Trans
The video shows freight containers of passing trains transporting goods and raw materials across the Eurasian continent from a window of the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia.
Jury statement: The film manages to pose numerous questions about consumption, transport logistics and globalization through minimalist formal language. The nature that flashes up again and again between the transport containers makes people in public transport ask questions about their own motivations and longings.
Martin Krammer - TREERUN
"TREERUN" 2022 shows a face of the much-cited ground sealing. As if trees wanted to leave the city at a gallop. Specifically, Auckland, Los Angeles, Bangkok and Puerto de la Cruz can be seen.
Jury statement: The trees and the partial breakthrough of the trees through the concrete show the force of nature and at the same time the domestication of nature. The rhythm captivates and irritates and thus makes viewers curious to take a closer look at these images from everyday life and to ask questions about human intervention in nature.
NEOZOON - FragMANts
FragMANts is a film about a direct and aggressive consumer culture of the modern western type society. The consumer madness repeats itself until it becomes a disturbing endless loop.
Jury statement: Consumer criticism is an important part of the climate debate. The film playfully raises this criticism and asks questions about waste and the throwaway society. The fragmentation of the bodies as well as the abstraction of the bodies and faces shifts the topic away from an individual critique to a collective level.
Christoph Schwarz - First Viennese Ecopyramid
Iconic images of the eviction of a squatted construction site in northeastern Vienna are subjected to an ironic reinterpretation: Could the story of a demolition be told differently in 30 years?
Jury statement: The film shows a strong position of the climate justice movement. However, in this case, rather than documenting, it shows an ironic reversal of the demolition of the pyramid into something positive by having it rebuilt by the excavators. Also recognizable is the mobilization of people that climate activism can provide.
Ernst Spiessberger - NO MEAT
NO MEAT refers to the excessive consumption of meat and its unrealistic representation in advertising. That vegetables displace meat is in the realm of the utopian.
Jury statement: This film shows the utopia of animal-friendly, meatless nutrition in a humorous and easily understandable way, without being didactic. In the play with aesthetics known from advertising, this is at the same time counteracted.
